Early in the morning I leave home with my bike and camera. I'm on my way to a flower that only blooms in de morning in May and June. Last year the plant interested me already, but I discovered the flowers only at the end of the flowering period and could not take a nice series anymore.
Today I am in time to see the Goat's-beard (in Dutch: Morgenster=Morning Star), the flower I’m talking about, open her buds with the first sunbeams. It is a composite flower (Dandelion-like) of which several variants exist. The yellow variant is very common in the Netherlands and grows along roads and in meadows.

The most striking and characteristic feature of this flower is the oblong bud, which I have never seen with any other composite flower. When the bud opens the outer skin falls apart in eight pieces (a kind of sepals). The parts are longer than the petals and form together a star.

After this first photoshoot I bike quickly to the botanical garden where I've discovered the purple variant: the Salsify. A cultured form that was used in earlier days as vegetable. It is one of the lesser known root vegetables, also known as oyster plant because it tastes slightly of oysters. It has a beige-white skin and looks similar to a long carrot in shape.

On my way home I pass around noon the yellow species again. The flowers are closed now. The plants are inconspicuously absorbed by the grass. Their stems sway softly in the wind, patiently waiting for a new tomorrow to open their buds.

Thanks to all my friends abroad for your enormous amounts of spontaneous, nice comments and praising words on my last blog. In the last few weeks I have worked very hard in the garden and our house. Of course I haven't totally forgotten my camera in the meantime. From now on I will start visiting you again on your blog, but it will take some time to visit you all.
Groetjes/ Greetings from the Netherlands, Joke
